is this poetry…

the boss is coming and i need this out

before his flabby jowls assault me

he’s tall

he’s overweight

his excess coagulates at random points about his person

he treads boards

amateur ones

musical ones

they sing with pleasure

as one does when the whip spurs

when you think all your breath has gone

there’s always a little extra for a song of praise or the safety word

and then there’s next time

i can see the future and it’s too bright

it hurts my eyes and i don’t like it

no not one little bit

&c &c &c

i don’t fully understand poetry; i don’t entirely know what it is about their content that makes them poems, for if it is not about content, then layout is all i have; this for instance, is a catchy story:

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary, over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, while I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, as of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. `’Tis some visitor,’ I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door – only this, and nothing more.’ Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December, and each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow; – vainly I had sought to borrow from my books surcease of sorrow – sorrow for the lost Lenore – for the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels named Lenore – nameless here for evermore.”

it goes on……

i initially thought that it was just the poems that rhymed which were ‘obvious’ poems; but i changed my mind and am now at a complete loss……or maybe not, and it is just layout

  1. yes, that is poetry. here’s my definition of poetry: using as few words as possible to say as much as possible, but saying it in a unique way that isn’t the same as speaking or sentence form. and you did that.

  2. and i read the previous post, and i see the similarities. but this is poetry because it is written in a unique way compared to the previous post.

    • thank you for your quick response, but they’re not just similar; they’re exactly the same words in the same order just laid out differently; is the raven still a poem when organised into sentence form?

      • seemed to me that one was far longer than the other. i looked for that, now i have to go back.

      • it was definitely longer but to save space due to the infernal line spacing wordpress has i stopped and just wrote &c &c &c &c instead

      • the shorter one doesn’t read like prose. even if it’s the same words, just broken and arranged differently, that’s still unique compared to a paragraph. but i know what you mean. some things just don’t seem like “poetry.”

      • hmm…..not convinced by any of it, but i appreciate your time; there’s still a bruce question coming you’ll be pleased to know

  3. His excess coagulates at random points about his person…
That is perhaps the finest descriptive line I have ever read. And I read a lot.

    • thank you….the thought of describing stuff often bores me; just have to find those words, and then put them in the right order

      • Dude, what’s up?

      • nothing…..is my tone off? i’m very happy actually :::::::——-)))))))

      • I just couldn’t get hold of you. I panicked.

      • bless you….i’m a rare beast who can manage to stay away from a computer and not care

      • Well, my mom always says, if you start feeding the birds in your yard, and you do it for long enough, the birds become dependent on the food and can’t find it themselves. So maybe you can’t go on vacations anymore, or your birds will die.
